tfheen Thu, 15 Apr 2004 - Forest trip

Woke up by myself far too early, but managed to sleep a bit more. My AMD64 system is noisy for the time being, since I don't have the correct fan yet. I think I need to get suspend working to alleviate this. Got up and had some breakfast. Played around with my new box for the first part of the morning, while cleaning up my apartment in between. It helped a lot, so I can actually see the floor again now.

I thought I had a lecture at 11, but it was cancelled, so I stayed at home, hacking. My box can now actually load modules and such in 64 bit mode, which is very nice, since my mouse then works. Of course, a lot of packages need fixing to use /usr/local/sbin/modprobe instead of /sbin/modprobe, but I'll file bugs when I see the problems.

Agnes picked me up at about three o'clock for the reconnaissance trip into the woods. We picked up Bjørn Ove as well and drove up to the woods. Walked for about an hour through knee-deep snow. The snow was fairly firm, so we didn't sink much, but it was a bit of work anyhow. The place we're staying looks excellent, and I'm looking so much forward to the trip. Ate some chocolate and walked back before we went food-shopping, like only Bjørn Ove and I can do. Lots of nice food.

Agnes was tired, so she left the car at her place, while Bjørn Ove and I drove to the last food shop and picked up the last ingredients. On the way back, I jumped off at Karianne's, even though she wasn't home. Her small and cute desert rats were given water and food, which they needed, before I headed towards home. On my way, I also decided to drop by Hanne to pick up some stuff I'd left there. We ended up talking for a while before I walked home.

Tired, I arrived home and managed to remember the two things I were to: a frying pan and to fix up my boots for the real trip. Ate some dinner, IRCed a bit before going to bed.

tfheen Thu, 15 Apr 2004 - Back at the university.

Came back by train yesterday, and I've already learned to hate the UPS. It's heavy. It's heavy, and it's heavy. My shoulders have been hurting ever since, and I hope it'll stop soon.

Woke up at seven today, and put my AMD64 system into golem's old box before breakfast. (The store wasn't open yet, so no time wasted.) Didn't have any time to really play with it before leaving for the university, but managed to pull a wire through the living room, since the WLAN was unstable. Need to look into it, but probably not until after I've switched the box to 2.6.

The university was boring, experts in team, as it is on Wednesdays. The only nice spot was that ssh and IRC kept me company. Even the university's VPN was broken, so I couldn't really surf the web or anything either.

Went down to Samfundet and started hacking at vawad, which took the whole evening. Missed out on my dancing class as well, which really sucks; I enjoy it a lot, but I was both tired and not feeling too full of energy and I wanted to fix up vawad before it got too late.

Went to Bjørn-Ove's later and ate some more food, drank some port and some of his liquor. Also tasted some spiced apple wine, which was good. Talked with Karianne on the way home, which was nice.. She seems to be a bit tired now, and I want her back in Trondheim, both because I miss her, but also because she ought to before she hits the ground hard. Even though she has good friends around her, it's not nice when she exhausts herself like that, so I try to pull her back, not too successfully so far, though.

Looking forward to tomorrow's reconnaissance in the woods, as preparations for Friday's forest trip. Tired and sleepy now.

tfheen Thu, 15 Apr 2004 - Hardware sucks. Really.

As you have noticed, both "Planet Debian":http://planet.debian.net and my "blog":http://raw.no/personal/blog/ has been down for some days. This is due to hardware failure, and me being about 500kms away unable to fix it.

Today, I started at the task. I thought the problem was the main hard drive, which I no longer really think, but who cares. I removed the hard drive and copied the contents over to a new one. After a little fiddling, it seemed to work fine. Of course, it didn't work fine, it just looked like it. fsck complained about "trying to access beyond end of partition" and similar, fun, errors. Of course, it was wrong, and after a little head-scratching, I gave up and repartitioned the disk.

So far, so good, but then the system died completely while I was working on it. Picking out all the eight hard drives, then putting them back in, one by one. Yeah, and the RAM slot on the motherboard is placed in such a way that you have to remove all the memory in order to move any of the hard disks. Excellent design.

Then, once that was fixed, the box refused to get on the net. It would receive packets, but not send any. Naturally, it made me angry, and I decided to break the network card, which I did. Two pieces. To add injury to insult, I had the misfortune of nearly trampling my left foot with my right one, so my foot hurt as well, not just my pride.

I left for Bjørn-Ove's food and a few glasses of port and other wine instead. Much better, and thanks.
